A large number of people have already thought it for many years that the profit, the profit hunting itself is the root of all evil.
The world-famous Hungarian philosopher György Lukács (often written as Georg Lukács) is known for arguing that the capitalist profit motive is the source of moral and social alienation which ultimately leads to the decay and extinction of humanity. His core idea is that under capitalism, everything is driven by production, trade, and profit. The “Evil” effect of this system is that capitalism turns everything—including human time, relationships, and souls—into “things” to be bought and sold. As a consequence, employers stop seeing employees as human beings, people stop seeing each other as valuable human living beings. They see others only as tools for financial gain or profit. And the society loses the essential reverence and respect for life itself.

To Lukács, this calculation is what deeply corrupts modern human society. Lukács used a heavy philosophy term instead of “root of all evil”: Reification (or Verdinglichung in German), the process by which human social relations and humans themselves are traded as things, as commodities.
Another famous Hungarian political economist, Karl Polanyi, who wrote The Great Transformation (1944) argued that allowing the “free market” and the pursuit of profit to control human society destroys the natural social fabric of human life.
Profit and profit-driven thinking is proven to be very harmful for humanity, for human life. It leads to all wars, hostility, greed, conflicts, poisoning and pollution, the destruction of humanity, and in the end, all life on Earth. We can see the very harmful effects of profit and profit-driven thinking with our own eyes and experience all of them in our lives.
